26th February 2013, Jakarta-Indonesia: Quiksilver Indonesia in partnership with Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Garuda Indonesia is excited to announce that they will be holding an exciting live auction at an exclusive VIP event on Monday, March 4th during the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia, to raise funds in support of their Bali beach cleanup efforts. With the support of Surfing World Magazine and Coastal Watch, Quiksilver will be putting up 5 history-making collectors surfboards for auction, the proceeds of which will go towards the purchase of a new Barber Surf Rake beach cleaner that will be dedicated to grooming the sands of Seminyak Beach each day.
The invitation only event that includes food, drinks, and live music will kick off at 7 pm, and will see industry icons, pro surfers, and all the who’s who of surfing gathering together to support this worthy cause. Up for auction are 5 game-changing exact replica surfboards from Quiksilver’s greatest surfing legends, who will be there to hand the surfboards over in person to their lucky new owners.
On the docket are 4-time World Champion Mark Richards’ 7’8” Wing Pin Single Fin Replica, Martin Potter’s 6’2” Blue Hawaii 89 World Title Replica, Tom Carroll’s 7’8” Pat Rawson 91 Pipeline Replica, Jake Paterson’s 7’4” JC 98 Pipeline Replica, and Matt Hoy’s 6’3” J-Bay Maltese Cross Replica. To receive an invitation to the event you need to place your bid and email the attached form to firstname.lastname@example.org
This is indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of surfing history, as each board has a unique story to tell and changed the sport of surfing in some way, so whether you are an avid board collector or just an average surfer that wants something unique to hang on your wall and pass on your kids, don’t miss this chance. Each board is hand made and personally signed by the legend, and will also include a signed canvas print that contains a short story about the board and the legend, penned by Surfing World Editor Vaughan Blakey. Not to mention getting to meet the legend personally and getting your photo taken with him!
This event is the latest in Quiksilver Indonesia’s on-going Corporate Social Responsibility program, which started in 2008 in conjunction with Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and has recently been joined by Garuda Indonesia. The program started small, but working closely with the local communities of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Kedonganan now there is a 74 person beach cleanup crew, 4 tractors, 3 trucks, and more than 600 trash bin placements.
In addition to their beach clean up efforts, they also support Bali’s Lifeguards and the Kuta Beach Turtle Conservation as well as other local environmental organizations.
“The beach cleaning project was one of the first projects I got involved with when I working in Bali back in 2008,” says Quiksilver’s Jake “the Snake” Paterson. “If you’ve ever been to Kuta Beach in the rainy season you’ll know there was a huge need for someone to do something. So together with Coke we partnered up to clean the beach and what a difference it has made. That also led into things like the Kuta Beach turtle project, which just thinking about it puts a smile on my face. Getting to see those tiny turtles hatching and then taking them down to the water to set them free is such a great feeling. Getting a big Backdoor barrel and winning the Pipe Masters is a great feeling too, but knowing you’re doing something for the environment and for future generations is the best,” he added.
Last year at the Quiksilver Indonesia and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia sponsored Bali Big Eco Weekend over $50,000 USD was raised for the purchase of the first Barber Surf Rake unit and recently Garuda Indonesia bought the second one, so with this auction event at the Quiksilver Pro together with this years upcoming BBEW the goal is to raise enough money to buy a third and possibly even a fourth unit.
"It was an incredible experience being at the Quiksilver Coca-Cola Bali Big Eco Weekend last year with my kids,” said 1989 World Champion Martin Potter. “It's so valuable to educate the next generation about the environment and the problems that exist in Bali. As Australians who travel there, we should all understand the problem and do our bit to help out. My kids are not used to seeing beaches left in that state, and it really hit home for them."
The next BBEW will be taking place in Bali on June 22nd and 23rd and will include the special Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge on the 23rd, where surfing legends Tom Carroll, Jake Paterson, Simon Anderson, Matt Hoy, Martin Potter and MR have already confirmed their participation. This exciting inaugural event may even see such surfing stars such as Lisa Anderson, Jeff Hackman, Stephanie Gilmore, and Kelly Slater in attendance, and if so will join Bali legends Made Kasim, Ketut Menda, Made Lana, Made Switra, Gede Narmada, Ketut Pitur and local pro’s Dede Suryana, Tipi Jabrik, and some lucky visitors in this team challenge format event.
Bali and Australia’s relationship began in the early 70’s, and Quiksilver wants to ensure that this relationship continues and Australians have epic waves, clean water and clean beaches now and for the future generations, so bringing this event to the Gold Coast during the Quiksilver Pro is great way to make sure it happens.
“The largest single group of tourists that come to Bali each year are Australians,” explains Quiksilver CEO of SEA Paul Hutson. “I don't think there would be a surfer in the line up at Snapper that hasn't been to Bali. It was Australian surfers in the 70's that pioneered the adventure of surfing in Asia and found Bali and other perfect waves throughout the Indonesian archipelago. We know there are serious environmental issues in Bali and around Indonesia and we think it’s absolutely mandatory to do something about it, so we are. But we need help to do it, so we’re reaching out by bringing more attention to it with our set up and auction at the Quiksilver Pro. I really want to say a special thank the legends for their time and support in working with PT Quiksilver Indonesia on this initiative, so we can keep Bali and other parts of Indonesia clean for us all to enjoy,” he concluded.
So come on down to the Gold Coast and enjoy not only watching the best surfers in the world competing at Snapper Rocks, but take a moment to stop by the Quiksilver Indonesia booth and see what they are doing to ensure the future of Bali and Indonesia’s waves for all to enjoy.
